7 Killed in Twin Bomb Blasts in Bannu as Terror Attacks Continue in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Seven people were killed and three others injured after two powerful bomb blasts struck Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, highlighting the growing security challenges in Pakistan’s northwestern region.
According to local police, the explosions took place in the Phang Musa Khel area of Marka Bera, a mountainous region in Bannu’s Wazir subdivision. Officials said the attacks were carried out using remote-controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The first blast targeted a private passenger vehicle that was traveling toward Domel. The explosion completely destroyed the vehicle and killed five people on the spot. Several others were seriously injured in the attack.
As local residents and rescue workers rushed to help the victims and transport the injured to nearby hospitals, a second explosion occurred nearly one kilometer away. The second blast targeted another vehicle carrying some of the injured victims, killing two more people and causing additional injuries.
Rescue 1122 teams quickly reached the scene and shifted the bodies and injured individuals to Domel Rural Health Centre and Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that seven people lost their lives in the back-to-back explosions while three others remained under medical care.
Bannu District Police Officer Yasir Afridi confirmed the casualties and said security forces immediately launched a search operation in the area. Bomb disposal teams and investigators collected evidence from both blast sites to determine how the attacks were planned and executed.
Police described the incidents as a cowardly act of terrorism aimed at targeting innocent civilians. Officials also conducted a thorough sweep of the surrounding area amid concerns that additional explosive devices could be present.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far. However, security experts believe militant groups operating in the region may be involved. Bannu and other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist incidents over the past year, raising concerns among residents and security officials alike.
President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attacks and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. The president also vowed that terrorists and their supporters would not succeed in destabilizing Pakistan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the bombings and assured the nation that those responsible would be brought to justice. National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq described the attacks as a shameful act against innocent civilians and said the entire nation stood united against terrorism.
The latest tragedy comes at a time when Bannu is already facing increasing security concerns. In recent weeks, militants attempted to damage important infrastructure in the district, while several police officers have been targeted in separate attacks. Local tribal leaders recently demanded stronger action from the government to eliminate militant networks operating in the area.
Security analysts say the twin blasts demonstrate how terrorists continue to target vulnerable communities in remote regions. They stress that improved intelligence sharing, stronger border security, and community cooperation are essential to preventing future attacks.
As investigations continue, the people of Bannu are mourning another painful loss. The incident serves as a reminder that the fight against terrorism remains one of Pakistan’s biggest security challenges, and authorities face increasing pressure to restore peace and protect civilians across the region.
