FIFA Suspends Nepal From International Football Over Governance Dispute

World football governing body FIFA has suspended Nepal from all international football activities with immediate effect after finding serious violations of its rules related to third-party interference in the country’s football administration. The decision means Nepal’s national teams and football clubs will not be allowed to participate in any FIFA or Asian Football Confederation (AFC) competitions until the suspension is lifted.
The suspension was announced after FIFA concluded that the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) was no longer operating independently. According to FIFA, Nepal’s National Sports Council interfered in the football federation’s governance and election process, which goes against FIFA statutes that require every member association to function without outside influence.
Why Did FIFA Suspend Nepal?
The dispute began after Nepal’s National Sports Council refused to recognize ANFA’s planned elections. This created uncertainty over the leadership of Nepal’s football federation and delayed the election process. FIFA and the AFC had repeatedly warned that continued government or third-party interference could lead to disciplinary action if the issue was not resolved.
After reviewing the situation, the Bureau of the FIFA Council decided to suspend ANFA under the FIFA Statutes. The suspension took effect immediately and will remain in place until Nepal resolves the governance issues and meets FIFA’s conditions for reinstatement.
What the Suspension Means
The ban has major consequences for football in Nepal. Both the men’s and women’s national teams are now barred from playing in FIFA and AFC tournaments. Nepalese football clubs are also prohibited from taking part in international club competitions.
In addition, ANFA and its officials will lose access to FIFA and AFC funding, development projects, coaching courses, referee education programs, and other technical support that normally helps member associations improve football in their countries.
Can the Ban Be Lifted?
Yes. FIFA has made it clear that the suspension is not necessarily permanent. The governing body said Nepal can regain its membership once the issues surrounding third-party interference are fully resolved and the football association is allowed to operate independently according to FIFA regulations.
Football experts believe that if Nepal quickly resolves the governance dispute and successfully conducts an independent election process, FIFA could lift the suspension before the next FIFA Congress.
Blow to Nepal Football
The suspension is a major setback for football in Nepal. Although the country has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup, football remains one of its most popular sports. Nepal has regularly participated in South Asian competitions and won the AFC Solidarity Cup in 2016, one of the biggest achievements in its football history.
The ban also affects young footballers who were hoping to represent Nepal in upcoming international tournaments. Clubs will miss valuable international exposure, while coaches and referees will lose opportunities for FIFA-supported training and development.
FIFA’s Strict Rules on Independence
FIFA has consistently enforced strict rules against political or government interference in football associations. Under its statutes, every national football federation must remain independent when conducting elections, managing competitions, and making administrative decisions.
In recent years, several countries have faced FIFA suspensions over similar governance issues. FIFA says these rules are necessary to protect the integrity and independence of football worldwide.
What Happens Next?
Nepal’s football future now depends on how quickly the governance dispute is resolved. Officials will need to work with FIFA and the AFC to restore confidence in the country’s football administration and meet all requirements for reinstatement.
Until then, Nepal’s national teams and clubs will remain absent from international football, marking one of the biggest setbacks the country’s football community has faced in recent years.
